Benefits of Yoga for Seniors

Senior Yoga Washington

Yoga is a relaxing and adaptable exercise that works for a variety of different people. This type of exercise is versatile and can accommodate people with a range of physical ability and needs. For those who are older and would like to try yoga but worry they won’t be able to complete the poses, rest assured that you can benefit from yoga too.

The Many Benefits of Yoga

In most cases, many seniors can do yoga. Yoga provides you with a sense of community and helps you prevent falling into a sedentary lifestyle after retirement. By picking up new healthy habits, you can help to promote longevity and establish valuable social connections.

Other benefits of yoga for seniors include improvements in:

  • Strength
  • Muscle tone
  • Mood
  • Balance

You can also increase your lung capacity through breathing exercises called pranayama, and you may also see improvements in your posture and your sleep habits. It is recommended that you attend at least three yoga classes per week at our fitness center in Washington for the best results.

How to Get Started with Yoga

You can determine what type of yoga to start with based on your age, current level of fitness, and your physical ability. If you’ve taken a long break from exercising or are just getting started, you should consider starting with the gentle Hatha practice.

It is recommended that you attend in-person classes to learn yoga to reduce your risk of injury.  For Level 1 or Gentle Yoga, individuals must be able to get on and off the floor.

Adaptive yoga such as chair or water yoga is also a great option for those with limited mobility. Be sure to consult with your doctor before starting yoga, especially if you suffer from issues such as glaucoma or spinal disc problems.
